OK KID
« Since releasing their debut album in 2013, OK KID have grown to become one of Germany’s most popular acts. The Cologne-based band has over 30m plays on Spotify and 20m views on their YouTube channel, and they have an incredibly busy summer ahead playing at major festivals including Hurricane Festival in Scheeßel, and Juicybeats in Dortmund. Wondering about their name? Well it came from merging two album titles from Radiohead (‘OK Computer’ and ‘Kid A’) who they say are a major inspiration. »

OK Kid’s 2016 album ‘Zwei’ was their breakthrough record, going to #6 in the Official German charts and producing a string of popular singles, and they followed it up with last year’s ‘Sensation’, their third critically acclaimed album. The lead single ‘Lügenhits’ now has over 2m Spotify plays alone, and earlier release ‘Warten auf den starken Mann’ was even described as the best music video in the world by VICE Magazine. After the release of ‘Sensation’, the band spent the rest of 2018 and the start of this year on a major tour of their homeland, playing sizeable venues including C-Halle in Berlin.

While their potent mix of hip-hop, indie and synth-pop sounds great on record, OK KID’s live performances are where they really come to life, so we were delighted to welcome them to ibis Music (in partnership with Sony Music Germany). As part of our 2019 campaign, which has hosted 44 shows in 17 countries, OK KID performed seven very special intimate electronic live shows around Germany, Austria, and Swizterland, with local support coming from up-and-coming talent sourced with the help of our partner Spotify.

At their hometown show in Cologne, we spoke to OK KID to learn about the music that inspires them and the artist they’d love to work with. We are also delighted to share an exclusive Spotify playlist from the band, featuring some of their favourite songs.

Is there any one artist that has been your key inspiration?

We all come from different genres and grew up listening to different music, so there has never been just one specific artist that’s connected us all. Perhaps it’s something in-between Queen, The Beastie Boys and Dr Dre!

Is there a song that takes you back to being young?

There are lots of trashy dance songs from the 90s that bring back a lot of memories – they make us feel like dumb and drunk teenagers once again!

If you could collaborate with one artist who would it be?

Mike Skinner from The Streets is amazing and we’d love to work with him someday. He continues to make great records and he’s still doing such exciting live shows. Maybe ibis Music can arrange a studio session?!

How do you use Spotify to help find new music?

We really like tools such as Recommend Songs and Fans Also Like which allow you to locate similar artists, and the personalised weekly playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar are very cool too.

Who are you listening to on-repeat currently?

Check out our Spotify playlist! Those are all songs we’ve been listening to recently, from older ones like ‘Southern Comfort’ from the first Burial album, right up to new UK rapper Slowthai. You’ll see our inspiration is very diverse!
