Sziget Festival 2019
19th July 2019
The globally renowned Sziget Festival hosts over 1000 artists during a weeklong celebration, and a look at previous headliners shows the scale of the event – Prince, Rhianna, The Prodigy, Biffy Clyro and David Guetta have all performed. 2019’s edition is no exception, with heavyweight headliners including Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, Foo Fighters and Martin Garrix.
With a multitude of locales to suit every ear, the festival hosts a dizzying array of incredible artists across all genres. And our ibis presents Europe Stage will return with seven days of the most exciting new music from around the globe.
On Wednesday 7 August, it’ll host a celebration of the up-and-coming ibis Music acts that have been playing ibis hotels around the world over the last three months, with nine hand-picked acts joining us from Brazil, Morocco, UK and more. From Thursday 8 – Tuesday 13 August, the stage will host artists as part of the regular Sziget Festival program, with essential new acts such as Algiers, Sophie Hunger and Naaz all playing.
ibis’ ones to watch
Coming to join us in August? Here are just some of the exciting up-and-coming acts playing across the festival we’d recommend checking out.
For fans of punk-rock, Idles from Bristol, UK bring a raw, authentic energy to their live shows, and have become an iconic act in their homeland. The angry rambles of songs like ‘Mother’ and driving urgency of ‘Danny Nedelko’ perfectly encapsulate the spirit of this unique band. Fun, raucous and politically charged, they’re a must-see for a rock ‘n’ roll fix. (Mastercard STAGE by A38 Tuesday, Aug 13. 19:15)
If you want to experience a cool new band to tell your friends about, make sure you get down the front for Parcels. The Byron Bay, Australia via Berlin, Germany-based band describe themselves as, "a blend between electro-pop and disco-soul”, and they’re guaranteed to get the party started. Check out their single ‘Overnight’ (which was produced by none other than Daft Punk) for an example of the band’s additive funk-tinged pop. (Mastercard STAGE by A38 Sunday, Aug 11. 22:00)
Bulgarian producer Kink is a wizard of dance music who manages to blend a mastery of technology with an unteachable ability to bring the party. Consistently innovating at the forefront of the electronic scene, his heavy beats always rock the dancefloor and take the crowd on a wild journey. Known for his spontaneous live performances, Kink uses analogue synthesisers and experimental controls to improvise a fusion of house, jazz and acid sounds that truly tests any heavyweight sound-system! Check out his numerous and energetic Boiler Room Sessions online for a glimpse of what he does best. (Samsung Colosseum Saturday, Aug 10. 04:00)
Sometimes you need to find a moment to take it easy and lower the tempo. Hailing from Texas in the US, instrumental trio Khruangbin bring a wonderfully delicate and laid-back surf-rock sound. Intertwining and reverberant guitars glide gracefully over soulful, warm basslines, wrapping you up in cotton wool and transgressing your ears to another place. 2018’s album ‘Con Todo El Mondo’ was an instant, if unexpected classic. (Mastercard STAGE by A38 Tuesday, Aug 13. 00:30)
And finally, for a taste of European sounds, get your dancing shoes on for Barcelona-based Maruja Limón. The talented five-piece create traditional flamenco music for the 21st century; steeped in the sounds of the genre, they transform its roots with eclectic, energised songwriting. Brilliant musicianship and bold vocals are layered together to make an authentic Spanish sound that modern pop fans will also connect to - listen to their track ‘Más de Ti’ on Spotify for a perfect taster of their charm.
