ibis presents Europe Stage
13th August 2019
World - ibis Team
Absolutely colossal in scale, and with every style of music covered, it’s an incredible week-long celebration of music, and ibis is proud to once again be showcasing some of the world’s best up-and-coming artists at our very own stage. From 7th – 13th August, the ibis presents Europe Stage will feature a global mix featuring non-stop live music all week.
And to kickstart proceedings on the opening day on Wednesday 7th August, we’re hosting a very special ibis Music event on the famous stage, bringing nine hand-picked acts from nine different regions around the world to perform to the Sziget masses. Each of the acts were initially curated by analysing local listening data with the help of our partner Spotify, before performing to the public at one of our special ibis Music events. Each act was then selected by our team of judges (including Sony Music, Spotify and ibis representatives) as the most exciting artist from their region, and we can’t wait to let you hear them live on the day.
So let us introduce the nine incredible acts!
Maria Yfeu (Spain, Southern Europe)
feu only released her debut single ‘Grudges’ on Spotify in March, but it’s already become a playlist favourite, clocking up over 80,000 plays. She recently followed it with ‘Let It Grow (Up)’, another beautiful track showcasing her warm jazz vocals reminiscent of the late Amy Winehouse, with elements of Adele and Lianne Le Havas as well. Performing a stripped-back set at ibis Music, our judges collectively sensed the immense potential in this exciting new artist.
Nxdia (United Kingdom)
18-year-old Egyptian-born Nxdia released her excellent second single 'Complex' on Spotify in December of last year and it’s been on-repeat on our playlists ever since. A smart mix of hip-hop inspired beats and bass-heavy synths is topped with a bold soulful vocal heralding a hugely promising talent, with respected online tastemaker platform Earmilk supporting the track. Our judges unanimously selected her from our UK artists, sensing a star in the making.
Gilsons have been performing all over Rio de Janeiro in recent months, building a strong local following. The trio play an addictive samba sound blended with a contemporary modern groove, and their recent single ‘Love Love’ can be heard on Spotify's very own playlist ‘Nova Som’, showcasing the best new Brazilian talent, helping it to over 600,000 plays. They supported Sony Music superstar Lucas Lucco in their home city and wowed our judges with their musicianship and great vibe.
Qaayel has a modern kaleidoscopic sound akin to major US artist The Weekend, with a mixture of r’n’b, soul and pop, and is a well-styled pop star in the making with a cool aesthetic. Seen as one of Morocco’s most exciting new talents, he’s only released music on Spotify since 2018 but has solidly built momentum, with his track 'Reviled' already having over 250,000 listens, and new single ‘By My Side’ showing a brilliant flair for melodic pop that could comfortably fit alongside global superstars. An exciting talent, he writes, produces, performs and mixes all his music, and his energised live show won the judges’ support.
MVNSI (Belgium, Benelux)
This exciting Belgian-Congolese rapper has risen to become one of the best new voices in Belgian urban music. Coming in touching distance of winning major Belgian music competition 'De Nieuwe Lichting', his accessible form of hip-hop mixed with afrobeats is winning him plaudits from across the industry. His performance at our ibis Music event in Brussels dazzled our judges, with his skilled flow and energy keeping the whole crowd thrilled. He has been featured in Belgium’s Spotify charts and his track 'Pas Question' has been regularly played on local radio.
So Flow (Poland, Eastern Europe)
So Flow mix jazz, soul and hip-hop to make a groove-driven pop sound that works beautifully live, and fans of Jorja Smith, Jordan Rakei, and Elder Island will instantly warm to their infectious music. They have played many shows within Krakow and around Poland, growing a healthy social media following, and the judges loved their songs in their ibis Music performance and the band’s tight musicianship and vibe.
Electronic artist Moglii is a star in the making, with a fast-growing audience that’s already listened to his tracks millions of times on Spotify. Mixing synth-based production with a warm, organic pop songwriting style, his music has a sophisticated and contemporary sound that’s ready to export around the world. His energised live show blends programmed beats with live keyboards and vocals, and it’s going to sound spectacular on the ibis presents Europe Stage, where he’ll be adding an additional vocalist to the line-up. As well as being a rising superstar in his own right, he’s also building a reputation as a songwriter/producer for other artists, with recent collaborations with Elderbrook and Hayden James.
Glass Cristina (Mexico)
This Cancun-based band have a laidback, soulful electronic sound, influenced by Jungle, Bon Iver, Alt J and TV On The Radio. Their latest track ‘Scaramouche’ is building on the success of their previous single ‘Supermagic', which has already racked up over 125,000 streams on Spotify. Their ibis Music performance in their home city was electric, and everyone attending could sense this was the band destined to represent Mexico at Sziget Festival.
With influences ranging from Amy Winehouse to SZA and singing in English, Nae brought a brand of sophisticated and smart soulful pop music to ibis Music, supporting French superstars Boulevard Des Airs at our Bordeaux show. Firmly rooted in her local music scene and a member of ‘The World Wide Kids’ collective of artists, she’s got the potential to become the next Jain or Christine & The Queens. Our judges were all drawn to her engaging performance and she was a clear choice as the French artist to join us in Budapest.
